Chemical Biology - School of Chemistry

MSc Chemical Biology

Welcome from the programme manager

The University of Leeds offers the first taught MSc degree in Chemical Biology in the UK. A range of scholarships are available to talented students including fully funded scholarships which cover tuition fees at the UK/EU level and a tax-free stipend of at least £13 000.

The Astbury Centre at Leeds brings together research excellence in chemical biology, synthesis, structural biology and biophysical methods.

This masters course focuses on using chemical methodology to tackle complex biological problems. You will be taught by experts in chemical and structural biology using a "problem-based" approach. In addition, visiting lecturers from the pharmaceutical industry provide expertise in industrially-relevant applications of chemical biology.

Our Chemistry research facilities are unrivalled in the UK, and have been enhanced thanks to substantial investment by the Wellcome Trust (£7.5M) and the University of Leeds (£1.5M). The Chemical Biology course takes full advantage of these facilities through an extended interdisciplinary research project supervised by two members of staff with complementary expertise.

On graduation, you will be ideally placed to undertake interdisciplinary research in academia or industry. In addition, you will also be in a strong position to pursue a science-related career such as patent work, scientific publishing or scientific administration. Many of our graduates have secured positions on Chemical Biology PhD programmes in the UK and internationally. The University of Leeds hosts a wide range of PhD programmes incorporating Chemical Biology, offering many opportunities for students graduating from the MSc course.
